Orthodontics Glossary & Knowledge Base — OrthoBoutique
Orthodontic terms and treatments can sometimes feel overwhelming, especially if it’s your first experience with braces, aligners, or jaw-related care. This glossary and knowledge base has been created by our team at OrthoBoutique to give patients and families a clear understanding of what each treatment involves, how our team provides it, and what to expect along the way.
You’ll find FAQs drawn from the questions we hear most often in the clinic.
Metal Braces
Stainless steel brackets and wires used to move teeth into better alignment. At OrthoBoutique, we use smaller, low-profile metal braces that are more comfortable and easier to clean than older braces.
Can I still play sports even with braces?
Yes. We recommend a custom mouthguard to protect teeth and brackets.
Will braces interfere with playing a musical instrument?
Some adjustment may be needed at first, but most patients adapt quickly.
What foods should I avoid?
Hard or sticky foods like nuts, toffees, or popcorn can damage brackets and wires.
How painful are metal braces?
Metal braces aren’t usually painful, but they can cause some temporary discomfort. When braces are first fitted or adjusted, you may feel tightness or pressure on your teeth for a few days. Some patients described it as a dull ache rather than sharp pain. This is a normal part of the teeth beginning to move.
The inside of your cheeks or lips may also feel a bit sore as they adjust to the brackets and wires. Orthodontic wax can help reduce irritation. Most patients adapt quickly, and everyday activities like speaking and eating feel normal after the first week or so.
Ceramic Braces
Ceramic braces are clear or tooth-coloured brackets, chosen for their discreet appearance. OrthoBoutique selects brackets that resist staining and blend naturally with your smile.
Are ceramic braces better than metal braces?
Ceramic braces aren’t “better” or “worse” than metal braces, they’re simply a different option depending on your needs. Ceramics work in much the same way as metal braces, but the brackets are clear or tooth-coloured, making them far less noticeable. Many adults and image-conscious teens prefer them for this reason.
The trade-off is that ceramic brackets can be slightly more fragile, and treatment may require extra care with what you eat. They can also be a little more expensive than metal braces.
Do ceramic braces stain?
The brackets themselves resist staining, but the elastic ties may discolour over time. These are replaced during adjustments.
Do treatments with ceramic braces take longer than metal braces?
Treatment time is usually similar, though ceramic brackets may be slightly less durable.
Are ceramic braces suitable for teens?
Yes, but we generally recommend them for older teens and adults who can take extra care.
Clear Aligners
Transparent, removable trays that gradually move teeth. When you visit OrthoBoutique, you’ll find that we use digital scans to design aligners that fit comfortably and achieve predictable results.
What happens if I lose an aligner?
Contact us right away. We may advise moving to the next set early or replacing the lost aligner.
Are there disadvantages to clear aligners?
Yes. While clear aligners are discreet and removable, they do have some drawbacks. They must be worn 20–22 hours a day, which requires discipline. Because they’re removable, they can be lost or damaged more easily than fixed braces.
Aligners also need frequent cleaning, and you’ll need to brush after meals before putting them back in. Some patients notice a slight lisp at first, and in complex cases, braces may still be the better option. Costs can also be higher than traditional braces in some situations.
Can I drink coffee or tea while wearing clear aligners?
It’s best to remove them before drinking anything other than water to avoid staining.
How often will I need clear aligner check-ups?
We recommend clear aligner check ups every 6–8 weeks, so we can monitor progress and provide new sets.
Invisalign
Invisalign is an orthodontic system that straightens teeth using a series of custom-made, clear aligner trays. The aligners are removable and almost invisible, offering a more discreet option than fixed brackets and wires. Many teenagers and adults choose Invisalign because it fits easily into everyday routines.
At OrthoBoutique, our orthodontist recommends wearing each Invisalign aligner for about 1–2 weeks before moving on to the next in the series. Patients visit the clinic every 6–8 weeks for progress checks and to collect new aligners. Invisalign is a popular choice for adults and teens who want a discreet, removable option.
How does Invisalign compare to traditional braces?
Traditional braces rely on metal brackets and wires, while Invisalign uses clear trays that can be taken out when needed. This makes aligners easier to clean and more convenient for eating, socialising, and brushing your teeth.
How many hours a day should I wear Invisalign?
For treatment to stay on track, aligners should be worn between 20 and 22 hours daily. They should only be removed for meals, brushing, flossing, or drinking anything other than water.
Do I need check-ups during Invisalign treatment?
Yes, you’ll attend regular progress visits so our orthodontist can monitor movement and provide your next sets of aligners.
How long does Invisalign take?
Treatment time varies depending on the complexity of tooth movement, but most cases are completed in around 6 to 18 months.
Are Invisalign aligners noticeable?
They are clear and fit snugly, making them far less noticeable than traditional braces.
Is Invisalign suitable for complex cases?
Invisalign can treat many bite and alignment problems, but very complex cases may still need braces. Our orthodontist will advise you during consultation.
Can I whiten my teeth while wearing Invisalign?
Some whitening products can be used, but always check with our orthodontist before starting.
Spark Clear Aligners
A newer generation of clear aligners made from TruGEN™ material, which is designed to be clearer and more resistant to stains than other aligner brands. Spark aligners also use advanced 3D scanning technology to create a personalised treatment plan.
Spark aligners are custom-fitted based on your digital scans. Like Invisalign, each set of aligners is worn for 1–2 weeks before progressing to the next. Many patients choose Spark because the aligners are virtually invisible and designed for comfort.
What makes Spark different from Invisalign?
Spark aligners use a newer material that is marketed as clearer and more resistant to discolouration, but both systems are highly effective.
Are Spark aligners better than Invisalign?
Neither system is universally “better” as both use clear trays to move teeth effectively. Spark aligners are made with TruGEN™ material, which is designed to be clearer and more resistant to staining, while Invisalign has the longest track record and a well-established digital planning system. The best option depends on your case, lifestyle, and our orthodontist’s recommendation.
Do I need to avoid certain foods?
No. Since aligners are removable, you can continue eating your favourite foods as long as you remove the trays first.
Are Spark aligners safe for teens?
Yes. Spark offers options for both adults and teenagers, but compliance or wearing them consistently is crucial to get results.
Do Spark aligners cost more than braces?
Costs depend on treatment length and complexity. Our orthodontist will discuss fees during your consultation.
How often should I clean Spark aligners?
Spark aligners should be cleaned at least twice a day, ideally whenever you brush your teeth in the morning and before bed. A quick rinse after meals is also recommended to prevent bacteria build-up and staining.
What happens if you don’t clean your aligners?
If aligners aren’t cleaned regularly, they can develop odour, discolouration, and a build-up of bacteria. This not only affects comfort and appearance but can also increase the risk of tooth decay and gum irritation.
Children’s Orthodontic Treatment
Our children’s orthodontic treatments are aimed at early orthodontic monitoring and intervention to guide jaw growth and prevent more complex issues later. Our orthodontists at OrthoBoutique recommend beginning assessments at age 7.
Does every child need orthodontic treatment?
No. Many children are monitored until adult teeth come through, and only treated if issues appear.
What problems can early treatment correct?
Crossbites, severe crowding, thumb-sucking habits, and early jaw growth issues.
Are expanders painful for children?
They can feel tight at first but usually become comfortable after a few days.
What is the best age for braces for kids?
Most children are ready for an orthodontic assessment around age 7, when adult teeth are starting to come through. Treatment with braces often begins between 10 and 14 years old, once most permanent teeth are in place. The exact timing depends on each child’s growth and dental needs.
How much do kids braces cost in Australia?
The cost of braces for children in Australia generally ranges from $3,000 to $9,000, depending on the type of braces and the complexity of treatment. Some health funds may cover part of the treatment, so it’s worth checking your policy.
Can braces fix overbite in children?
Yes, braces are commonly used to correct overbites in kids. In some cases, additional appliances like expanders or elastics may be recommended to guide jaw growth and improve the bite as your child develops.
Orthodontist for Adults
OrthoBoutique offers orthodontic options for adults who want straighter teeth or improved bite function. We offer discreet choices such as ceramic braces and clear aligners to suit work and social settings.
How common is adult orthodontic treatment?
Very common. A growing number of our patients are adults seeking improved function or confidence in their smile.
Will orthodontics damage my existing dental work?
We carefully plan treatment around crowns, fillings, or implants to keep them secure.
Do adult orthodontic treatments take longer?
Adult orthodontic treatments can sometimes take longer because adult bone is denser, but successful results are still very achievable.
Does orthodontics work on adults?
Yes, orthodontic treatment is effective at any age, as healthy teeth and gums can be moved whether you’re 16 or 60. Many adults choose braces or aligners to improve function, appearance, or both.
How long do braces take to straighten teeth for adults?
Treatment time depends on the complexity of the case, but most adults see results within 12 to 24 months. Mild cases may take less time, while complex bite corrections can take longer.
How long do braces for adults stay on?
On average, braces remain in place for 18 to 24 months. Our orthodontist will give you a personalised estimate based on your alignment goals and dental health.
Jaw Surgery
Jaw surgery or orthognathic surgery is designed for patients with significant bite or jaw discrepancies. Orthodontics may be combined with surgery to correct teeth or jaw alignment. Guided by experience, our orthodontist may work closely with maxillofacial surgeons to plan treatment.
How do I know if I need surgery?
Most patients don’t need surgery. It is only recommended for severe jaw discrepancies that braces or aligners can’t correct.
How long is recovery after a jaw surgery?
Most patients need 2–6 weeks of recovery, depending on the type of surgery.
Is it better to get jaw surgery or braces?
It depends on the severity of the issue. Braces can correct most alignment problems, but when the jaw itself is significantly misaligned, surgery may be recommended in combination with braces for the best functional and aesthetic result.
What is the best age for jaw surgery?
Jaw surgery is usually performed once growth is complete, typically in the late teens or early adulthood. This ensures the jaw has stopped developing and results are stable.
Does jaw surgery change your voice?
In most cases, jaw surgery does not change your voice. Some people may notice slight differences in how sounds are produced as the bite and jaw position improve, but this usually settles with time.
Do I need braces again after jaw surgery?
Yes, braces are typically worn before and after jaw surgery. They help align the teeth so they fit together properly once the jaw has been repositioned.
